Hazara

Sydney’s western suburbs of Auburn and Merrylands has become home to a thriving community of Afghan Hazaras. Having escaped from from violent persecution in their homeland of Afghanistan, the community still faces many challenges. I began  documenting the Hazara community in 2009 and is continues to work with the community providing support for the newly arrived.

Many of the young people I work with, in particular the Afghans face many questions around identity. Dealing with 3 cultures can be hard to navigate on top of language, housing and schooling issues. Parents born in Afghanistan, children have either grown up or born in Pakistan or Iran and now go to school or work here. Many families strongly encourage their children to maintain that Afghan culture but often after experiencing school here and feeling almost twice removed from the culture ends in a lot of inter-generational conflict.

This edit below is the one I shared on my instagram (https://www.instagram.com/georgevoulgaropoulos/) but I also wanted to share it here on the blog as a record

Haldon St, Lakemba

Aaaaaaand I’m back. Welcome to the new (old) blog! Now under the new address of georgev.com.au. Feel free to share :) In an attempt to free myself of any constraints, I will now be posting to this address. I will include photographs from my ongoing walks around the western suburbs of Sydney and photographs from my new body of work.

Ashura

The Day of Ashura is on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the end of the Mourning of Muharram. It is commemorated by Shi’a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (680 CE). In some Shi’a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Pakistan, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it.
The procession took place at 8am on November 14th from Hyde Park down Macquarie Rd to the Botanic Gardens in Sydney’s CBD. Participants included a variety of Shi’a community groups from Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and Syria just to name a few.

Quarter acre block

In this time of expensive housing, many young professionals are opting to put their savings into managed funds and then rent in the inner city, choosing lifestyle over owning a house. There are many people whose dream is to own the quarter acre block, driving them further west in search for the great Australian dream. “Sydney’s fastest growing suburb”, according to the billboard, is Oran Park. Situated around 12km north west of Campbelltown and 35 kms south of Penrith, this following photographs were taken in Oran Park, Campbelltown and Penrith.
